Fifties Dresses

Nifty Thrifty Fifties Dresses

Due to World War II, the fashion of the 1940s was limited. Companies were instructed to cut back on fabric, not to waste any on fancy leisure items such as flouncy dresses. The forties outfits were simplified, still elegant but very simplified.

When the 1950s rolled around, fashion had taken a turn for the better. Fifties dress were (are still) a lovely feast for the eyes. Many types of clothing today still imitate the fashion trends that were created in the fifties. Some gave the 1950s complete new looks such as the daring and bold rockabilly culture.

The fifties was a time for old rock n’ roll and beautiful tailored dresses. Ladies aimed for an hourglass figure, a perfect figure eight, so a fifties dress had to be made just right to achieve this. Women from the 1950s wore pencil dresses that were very flattering and fit their curves like a glove, swing skirts, wrap dresses, wiggle dresses. Of course no fifties dress was complete without a pair of smashing heels, a pair of gloves and a matching hat. Other well known styles for 1950 dresses included circle dresses with halter necks, floral printed dresses accented with large feminine bows and of course the famous broad collar or “Peter Pan” collar. The Peter Pan collar originated in the fifties and is still a fashion icon to this day.

From everyday casual wear to extreme glamor dresses, made to rock the red carpet in the 1950s, these websites have it all. Small simple collections to broad extensive collections, a fifties pin up lady or beautiful rockabella will find what they need to live life to the fifties.
