As one of 10 children of Mexican immigrants, Alicia started sewing her own clothes at age 16 to save cash. She turned her hand me downs into original outfits, and dressed up differently every day, striving to stand apart from the cookie-cutter punk rock scene she was surrounded by. She got tons of attention, negative and positive, so she one day wrote the words ’Stop Staring!’ in black marker on the back of a skirt made out of a shower curtain and her brand name was formed.
As a student at CalState Fullerton Alicia was a big part of the music scene, hanging out with No Doubt and Sublime in their early days. When she heard The Cramps were playing at the Hootenanny Rockabilly Festival, she set up a booth to sell her dresses and was an instant hit. Soon her fun sewing ‘hobby’ had turned into such a profitable business that her accounting teachers encouraged her to drop out of school to pursue fashion design full time, which she did with relish. As her business expanded, so did her figure, which is why Stop Staring! Clothing’s sizes go all the way up to 26. As she became more voluptuous, Alicia honed her skills in custom-tailoring clothes to show off feminine curves, flatten bellies and flatter all sizes. She works hard to make sure that all her designs have classic fit, timeless style and flawless construction so anyone who wears them will feel confident and empowered.
